I’ve been experiencing the frustrations, challenges and opportunities that arise in not knowing. In executive search and recruiting, like all businesses, there often comes a time that the strategies we develop and execute don’t yield the results required. It’s a moment in which I appreciate my training in improvisation.
Over the last year I have been performing musical improv. Sometimes it is frightening and intimidating to improvise songs. I can feel lost – I don’t know what I’m doing (I’m not an accomplished singer). In those moments what I’ve learned is that I have to “feel the music”.
Creativity often comes in the form of “pointlessness” and in play. Not knowing can be uncomfortable for all of us, our culture is a culture of knowing. Perhaps “feeling the music” means creating the space for pointless and playful conversation so we can collaboratively create new strategies beyond our individual capabilities as “knowers”.
